Polyphony

Where Gregorian Chant is typically offered by one or more people following the same music notes, polyphony overlays multiple voices with different notes to create glorious harmonies. Famous composers, particularly in the Counter Reformation period, developed scores to accompany Masses.

At this Mass, O quam gloriasum by Tomás Luis de Victoria will be offered. An indication of what you can expect is shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW9Ccv-xcRQ. It is known as "Victoria's perfect mass" and is his most popular.

If any Guild member would like to learn some polyphony after hearing Mass at Maiden Lane, please contact the London Representative, Alex Blatchford.

Mass for Unity

The Votive Mass for Unity has the full title: Mass For the Unity of the Church, Removal of Schism and Return of Separated Christians. As per the Collect:

O God, who dost correct what has gone astray and gatherest together what is scattered, and keepest what Thou hast gathered together, we beseech Thee in Thy mercy to pour down upon Christian people the grace of union with Thee, that putting aside disunion and attaching themselves to the true shepherd of Thy Church, they may be able to render Thee due service. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, who livest and reignest with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Also consistent with this Universal Mass, in England we have the Prayer for the Conversion of England there we implore Our Lady:

O BLESSED Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our most gentle Queen and Mother, look down in mercy upon England thy Dowry and upon us all who greatly hope and trust in thee. By thee it was that Jesus our Saviour and our hope was given unto the world; and He has given thee unto us that we might hope still more. Plead for us thy children, whom thou didst receive and accept at the foot of the Cross, O sorrowful Mother. Intercede for our separated brethren, that with us in the one true fold they may be united to the Chief Shepherd, the Vicar of thy Son. Pray for us all, dear Mother, that by faith fruitful in good works we may all deserve to see and praise God, together with thee, in our heavenly home. Amen.
