Sister Mary David Totah
Dear Members and Friends of the Guild.
May I respectfully request that you remember in your prayers the Soul of Sister
Mary David Totah who died on the 28 th August 2017 at the age of 60.
‘Who was Sister Mary Totah’ I hear you say.
In May 1985 Michele Totah entered St Cecilia’s Abbey on the Isle of Wight, receiving
the Benedictine Habit the following year and with it the name of Mary David. She
made her Solemn Profession in 1991. In the convent she worked in the vegetable
garden, kitchen and altar-bread bakery; in the convent art Studio, she learned
calligraphy and illumination, becoming one of the convent’s most gifted artists.
In January 2014 I wrote on behalf of our guild to Sister Mary in her capacity as
Prioress of St Cecilia’s Abbey requesting her assistance and that of her Sisters in
reproducing our guild prayer in Italian, and in an illuminated format for
presentation purposes to The Holy Father during the Guild’s Centenary Pilgrimage
to Rome later that year. Sister Mary wrote back, ‘we would very much like to help with
this exciting project…we gladly accept this commission for the Catholic Police Guild, we
consider it a privilege to do something for the Guild in their Centenary year- and of course
for The Holy Father’.
Six months later, during the guild’s centenary pilgrimage to Rome, The Holy Father
was presented with our illuminated Prayer by our Chaplin Father Barry Lomax.
Without Sister Mary David’s blessing, and inspiration, this presentation may have
never come about especially as she had been diagnosed in 2012 with cancer.
Sister Mary David helped us out, it is now our turn to help her out and the least we
can do is by remembering her in our prayers.
Sister Mary David, ’Eternal rest grant unto her O’Lord and let your perpetual
light shine upon her, may she rest in peace, Amen’.
